During the colder months of the year, the ways in which one can exercise or play sports are extremely limited. So when the weather starts to improve once summer comes around, the number of people who are being active increases significantly.
While playing any sport and doing any exercise comes with the risk of getting injured or falling ill, the summertime presents its own unique issues for athletes. Luckily, however, it's easy to increase your chances of getting the most out of an activity without suffering a setback.
One of the simplest ways to reduce the chances of straining or spraining something is by drinking plenty of fluids, which also protects people from dehydration and the other issues that can arise from it.
"The majority of heat-related illnesses and summer injuries can be minimized by paying extra attention to weather conditions, as well as the level of physical activity," Dr. Karen Kepler of the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation explained in a statement. "Similarly, both adults and children need to be aware of basic safety precautions when swimming, biking, playing or otherwise enjoying outdoor activities at home or on vacation."
In a list of safety tips that the Kessler Institute posed in a press release, the source emphasized the importance of wearing the correct protective equipment when playing a sport. Cyclists should always be wearing helmets when they are on their bikes, for instance. By wearing gear such as volleyball knee pads and soccer shin guards, athletes are dramatically lessening their chances of getting hurt.
